作为中国工程院院士和北京航空航天大学的教授,我熟悉王雯已有大约3年时间。在此期间,我对她出色的表现和孜孜不倦的求知印象颇深。她是一位深具潜力的学生,从其取得的学术成绩和完成的研究项目便可获悉。
2004年,她获得保研资格并成为我亲自指导的硕士班学生;之前经过了重重严格选拔,她凭借机械学院本科平均分年级的优异成绩以及在我实验室实习的出色表现脱颖而出。进入我的项目组后,她在学习和研究上似乎比以往展现出更大的潜力。她是一位修完我推荐的所有课程的学生,而大部分学生只是挑选一些简单的课程用来完成学分任务。坦白来讲,这些课程大部分都较为困难并极富挑战性。在我们实验室,她在许多科目上都名列。另外,她总是能超出我的期望,很快完成布置的任务。正如我所预想,她在机械工程学上比其他学生的前景更加乐观。
谈到研究能力,我认为王雯非常出众,从以下几个方面可以说明。首先,在 “可逆反应类型压榨机虚拟装配”项目中,一共有3个阶段:Solidworks建模、MultiGen Creator修改和Vtree设计。不管在那个阶段,她总能个掌握工具的用法,明白怎么使用工具并且指导该项目其他成员。此外,她的毕业研究项目“基于微波变换的曲线和表面整流和压缩冲程”也是很好的证明。她是一个研究该领域的学生,没有实验室的同伴能够提供有效帮助。她还自学了微波理论, Matlab (一种用于算法开发、数据可视化、数据分析以及数值计算的高级技术计算语言和交互式环境)等等,并且都取得了优异的成绩。“细分曲面几何建模及其在数控加工上的应用”的项目仍然在进行当中,她在小组中发挥着核心作用。过去3年,她不断展示着出色的研究和学习能力。作为她的专业导师,我对她的综合表现十分满意。我敢肯定不论是独自一人还是在团队中,她都能够很好地学习和有效地进行研究。

Dear Sir or Madam:
Now I’m very pleased to write this letter of recommendation for Wang, Wen’s admission to your Ph.D. program in Mechanical Engineering. She is one of the best students I have ever tutored.
In my capacity as an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor in Beihang University, I have known her for about three years, during which she impressed me with her excellent work and persistence in pursuing intellectual achievements. She is a very promising young student and you can find this by seeing her academic records and finished research projects.
She got to be my student in 2004, when I gave her a direct admission into my master program. She stood out through the rigorous selection because her undergraduate GPA ranked in School of Mechanical Engineering, and she did a wonderful job as an intern in my lab. After in, she seemed to have released more potential than ever in studying and research. She is the only one student who finished all the courses that I recommended, while most students just picked some easy ones to meet their credits requirement. Frankly, many of these courses are real tough and challenging. She got top scores in many courses and her GPA ranked the first in our lab. Besides, she can always finish her assignments much faster and better than I expected. As expected, she gained a more profound perspective in mechanical engineering than any other student here.
As for her research ability, I think it is considerably outstanding, which can be illustrated from the following aspects. First, in the program of “Virtual Assembly for Crushing Mill of Reversible Reaction Type”, there were three phases: modeling in SolidWorks, modification in MultiGen Creator, and programming in Vtree. In any phase, she was always the first one who could master the tool, understand how to implement it and then guide other members of the program. Second, for her graduation project “Curve and Surface Fairing and Compression Based on Wavelet Transform”, she was the only student studying in this area, without any help from her peers. Then she studied Wavelet theory, Matlab, etc, all by herself. And the result proved excellent. The project “Subdivision Surface Geometry Modeling and Its Application in the NC Machining” is still going on, and she also plays a central role in the project. During the three years, she has consistently demonstrated an outstanding research and learning ability. As her academic tutor I feel satisfied with her overall performance. I’m sure she can learn and conduct research effectively either independently or in groups.
Wang, Wen has a good command of English, so there is no problem with her in studying or working in your school. I believe her solid academic background, good personality and a resolution in ME research will enrich your community. I also believe the advanced facilities and highly honored scholars in your school will eventually satisfy her intellectual curiosity, and place her on a new academic track.

这封信里的人物——北航的才女王雯,获得全额奖学金资助、飞往卡内基梅隆大学攻读机械工程博士学位。
如果单论专业素质的话,相信清华、上交、北航、北理工、哈工大、华科等传统理工科强校肯定有比她更强的人,但终从众多候选人中脱颖而出的却只有她一个。其中一个不可忽视的原因在于王雯有一封来自中国工程院院士—— 她的硕士研究生导师—— 强有力的推荐信,王雯站在了巨人的肩膀上。
学校的教授是“势利眼”吗?为什么他们看到院士或者知名学者的推荐信就刮目相看?
这一点我们稍微深入想一下就明白了。
首先,能够争取到在院士手下做项目或者读研的机会,就已经证明该学生是经过了精挑细选的;
其次,以往经过了牛人的指导,该学生在眼界、锻炼机会、科研能力方面都超过了同龄人,比如,有多少学机械的学生能够在院士的指导下做“可逆反应类型压榨机虚拟装配”项目?
后,一个院士或者知名学者的诚信度是很高的,他们不至于为了一个学生而说假话,如果他们的推荐信很“给力”,那么被推荐的学生一定有过人之处。
“的人总是在影响着他周围的人或事,主动地或者非主动地。”接近的人,沾染他们的“仙气”,能够不知不觉中提高自身的实力。
英国数学家哈代在读剑桥大学的学期对于当时的偏应试教育体系很不适应,差点转到历史系,幸运的是他后来及时地遇到了一位真正的数学家,以致哈代在《一个数学家的辩白》中对他深表称颂:“我的眼界初是由乐甫(Love)教授打开的,他只教了我几学期,却使我对分析的严谨概念有了初的了解。我从乐甫教授那儿获益大的是他建议我读Jordan着名的《分析教程》(乐甫教授毕竟首先是一名应用数学家),我永远也不会忘记这部着作所给予我的震撼,不会忘记那本书对我这一代数学工作者的激励。读了这部着作,我次懂得了数学的真谛;也是从那时起,我走上了一个真正的数学家的道路,对数学树立了正确的目标,产生了真诚的激情。”
以上我们举的例子比较极端,没有多少人可以接触到院士或者级数学大师的机会。但生活中的“牛人”其实特别多,只要是那些在学术上或者事业上高你n个等级的人,都可以作为主动接近并学习的对象。
